We live in a society and we need to support and also see support from others. It becomes imperative that as a person you need to have a say over others. One of the techniques of Influencing Others is by Pacing and Leading.
When we communciate
A lot of things happens when we communicate. It is not only the words the other person hears, but also the way it has been said, the gestures, the postures. They are all visible. You could think it like an elegant dance in which people respond step by step to and with each other. So as we communicate, we are building trust and a sense of responsiveness with each other.
Pacing and Leading
Pacing and Leading is one of the keys to influencing people. It refers to meeting people half way and matching them where they currently are (pacing) and then taking them where you want them to so (Leading).
How does pacing and leading work
It works by blurring the the dinstiction between what is absolutely true and observable in the person’s own experience and what we want to be beleived is true or has yet to be established as true.
The normal patterns of pacing and leading will be something like this
- First Pattern: pace, pace, pace lead
- Second Pattern: Pace, pace, lead, lead
- Third Pattern: Pace, lead, lead, lead
However, before following this pattern it is imperative to be clear of the outcomes being sought
As you are working on the subject and you are going through the details, you might have developed ideas on what people are saying about it and what you could be doing about it in improving the situation
- As you are working on the subject (pace)
